ABOUT US

Serving Cleveland,TN Since 1967 — One Plate at a Time

OUR STORY

From the golden era of fast food to Cleveland’s beloved local institution

The chef

The Chef began as a Burger Chef franchise during the height of fast food’s golden era. In the 1970s, Burger Chef was the second-largest chain in the country, right behind McDonald’s  with over 1,300 locations.

Today, our Cleveland location is the only surviving store in the country in its original building that has never closed, just changed names.

We’re proud to be featured in the New York Times and honored to carry on the original “Hot Slaw” recipe that has become Tennessee’s first official state food.

From Burger Chef to Local Legend

Built in 1967 and never closed a single day since, The Chef in Cleveland, TN is more than just a restaurant, it’s a piece of American fast-food history. Once part of the iconic Burger Chef franchise, our building is the last of its kind still standing and serving.

We’ve carried on the flame with timeless recipes, family ownership, and one unforgettable flavor: Hot Slaw a spicy, tangy signature now recognized as Tennessee’s official state food.

The chef

"This place was never just about food, it’s about memories, family, and keeping a piece of Cleveland’s history alive on every plate."

Family-Owned Values

Family-owned and operated since 1967, we serve our community with quality, consistency, and no-nonsense flavor — one plate at a time. Every burger, every biscuit, and every serving of our famous Hot Slaw carries forward a tradition that connects Cleveland’s past with its present.

The Hot Slaw Legacy

Our signature Hot Slaw isn’t just a topping — it’s a piece of Tennessee history. This unique combination of cabbage, special seasonings, and that distinctive tangy flavor has been served the same way since our Burger Chef days.

When Tennessee officials were looking for foods that truly represented the state’s culinary heritage, Hot Slaw was chosen as Tennessee’s first official state food. Today, you can still taste that authentic flavor that put Cleveland on the culinary map.
